Traditionally, electroencephalography forms the basis of electrophysiological monitoring and assessment of the central nervous system function. Routine use of electroencephalography in an ICU is impractical and difficult to interpret. Hence the two-electrode cerebral function monitor and real-time spectral analysis, which is even more advanced, have been used. However, both these methods are expensive, require experienced operators with appropriate technical skills, and should be reserved for scientific use (Avramov, .and .While 1995).
