Myasthenic crisis

Several situations can precipitate a myasthenic crisis.

1. A sudden worsening of the myasthenic weakness may be the result of an inability to take or absorb the prescribed anticholinesterase therapy (e.g. persistent vomiting, coma, perioperative starvation).

2. Infection appears to worsen the myasthenic state. The weakness could be the result of a sudden rise in antibody production in general.

3. Mental or physical stress also seems to influence and exacerbate myasthenic weakness, although the cause is not understood.

4. The natural progression of the untreated disease can lead to bulbar and respiratory weakness and a crisis state.
