Muscle biopsy

Muscle biopsy is indicated in the diagnosis of myopathies and neuropathies. A variety of percutaneous and open techniques have been described. Muscle biopsy specimens may be examined histologically, histochemically, and biochemically. Muscle biopsy appearances can be used to differentiate between primarily myopathic disorders, in which a variety of myofibrillar abnormalities may be seen, and chronic neuropathic disorders, in which changes due to reinervation (principally fiber-type grouping) may be seen.
