Morbidity and mortality of hypernatremia

Hypernatremia is associated with substantial long-term morbidity and mortality. Snyderetal, (1987) reported a mortality of 42 per cent in elderly patients with hypernatremia, a finding recently confirmed with mortalities of 41 to 54 per cent reported in subsequent studies ( Long,,etal, 1991; Pallevsky,,, et, 1.9.96). Neurological morbidity, as assessed by changes in level of care, was present in 38 per cent of surviving patients ( ,Snyder,et,al, 1987,).
