Monitoring

A wide range of monitoring equipment which can be used for patient transfer is commercially available. The flexibility of a modular monitoring system may confer benefits in that the level of monitoring can be tailored to the patient's severity of illness with fewer indices needing measurement in the less ill patient. However, as the severity of illness increases, the connection and reconnection of monitoring lines and cables becomes more burdensome. Modules which retain the monitor set-up and can remain attached to the patient may be safer and more efficient. As with any form of patient transfer, the individual monitor used is not as important as its availability to measure the physiological variables deemed important.
