Mode of ventilation

With volume-targeted ventilation, tidal volume is reliably controlled. However, with pressure-targeted ventilation tidal volume depends on respiratory impedance and the patient's spontaneous respiratory pattern as well as ventilatory pressures ( SlutskyJ994). Therefore it cannot be adjusted directly.

In ventilatory modes which allow spontaneous breaths, the size of these breaths is also not directly controllable, except in the assist-control mode where each spontaneous breath is of a set tidal volume (if the ventilator is volume targeted).
