Miscellaneous other tests

A variety of other compounds which are utilized by the liver can be used as a test of hepatic function. Glucose homeostasis is closely controlled by the liver and is an ominous and early sign of fulminant hepatic failure. Although non-specific this can be used as a test of function, particularly in the acute phase following liver transplantation. The liver is also the major organ involved in lactate metabolism. A rise in serum lactate from any cause will be compounded by an abnormally performing liver, as metabolism will decrease and levels will rise. There are several other tests that can quantify hepatic function including the aminopyrine breath test and clearance of caffeine, antipyrine, sulfobromophthalein, or sorbitol. Most of these tests are rarely used outside the research laboratory and have little or no place in regular clinical practice.
