Mediators of ARDS and acute lung injury

Mediators of ARDS and acute lung injury, either of humoral origin or secreted by cells, trigger, spread, and sustain the inflammatory reaction and provoke effects via cascade mechanisms with multiple interactions (Demling 199.5). Numerous mediators have been described, with the most recent being identified using molecular biological techniques and using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid; this biological substance allows processes occurring in the target organ itself to be studied early in the pathological pathway. It is useful, for ease of categorization, to classify these mediators according to their origin, i.e. humoral or cellular.
