Adsorption of glufosinate to activated charcoal is only 3.4 mg/g (Hoechst Japan Ltd, personal communication). The surfactant, which has a hydrophobic long carbon chain in its structure, is expected to be adsorbed by activated charcoal. Diuresis is believed to be essential, because most of the absorbed glufosinate is eliminated in the urine. Hemoperfusion and hemodialysis are performed in series to eliminate surfactant and glufosinate respectively ( Koyama et..al 19.9.5b). However, the clinical effects of hemopurification are obscure.

It is essential to observe vital signs closely in hospital for at least 2 days regardless of the amount ingested, to provide respiratory support in all patients, particularly those who have ingested 100 ml or more, and to consider the development of delayed central nervous system signs even if the primary treatment is complete.
