Magnesium regulation

About 1 per cent of total body magnesium is in the extracellular fluid, of which 80 per cent is filterable and the remainder is protein bound. Roughly 95 per cent of filtered magnesium is normally reabsorbed and the kidney's range of magnesium excretion extends from 0.5 to 70 per cent. Extracellular fluid volume expansion, increased magnesium intake, calcium, or glucose load, alcohol ingestion, loop diuretics, cisplatin, and aminoglycosides promote magnesium excretion. Magnesium depletion and elevated PTH levels enhance magnesium reabsorption.
