Light and power

General overhead lighting must cater for day and night illumination. Dimmer switches are useful. Task lighting is also necessary at nursing stations and bed workstations for charting and treatment preparations. Bright spotlights are required at the bedside for procedures and emergencies. Each bed area should also be equipped with a night light and a reading light.

Electrical supplies must conform to national safety standards. Outlets close to the head of the bed should be sited well above the floor for easy access, and those at the sides should be sited close to the floor to minimize tripping over cables. A source of emergency power for electricity and light must be available to resupply power immediately if the main source fails.
