The kidneys are protected in part by the lower ribs, and injury should be suspected in patients with fractures of ribs 8 to 12. It is diagnosed by the presence of micro-or macroscopic hematuria, ultrasonography, or CT scan. In severe cases, renal artery or venous avulsion may lead to hemorrhagic shock and possible organ loss.
Renal function itself is also endangered by hemorrhagic shock, and the result may vary from reversible tubular necrosis to total irreversible renal failure.
