Key messages

• Restore circulation.

• Exclude reversible causes.

• Examine the patient's need for drugs which may cause hyperglycemia.

• If the patient is receiving intravenous nutrition, do not infuse more than 80 ml/h 25 per cent glucose in total.

• Consider lipid infusion as a source of calories if the patient is on intravenous nutrition.

• Feed enterally if possible.

• Insulin infusion should be titrated to effect.
