• Recognizing seizures in critically ill patients may be difficult because of the effects of other diseases and their treatments.

• An attempt to make an etiological diagnosis should be made in all critically ill patients with new seizures.

• Since seizures are frequently the first sign of an otherwise unsuspected intracranial mass in critically ill patients, almost all intensive care patients with new seizures need a neuroimaging study.

• Cerebrospinal fluid analysis and electroencephalography are important investigations in these patients.
