Respiration is the basis of all life. Without oxygen, cellular mechanisms fail, resulting in biochemical and physiological dysfunction which progresses to cell death. Without timely intervention to restore oxygen to the tissues, injury becomes irreversible. Oxygen molecules journey from the atmosphere to the cells by being drawn via a ventilatory mechanism through patent airways to the alveoli, where diffusion then occurs across the alveolar-capillary-erythrocyte membranes. Oxygen is transported around the body primarily as oxyhemoglobin using the circulatory system. The recognition of a compromised airway and the institution of techniques to restore and maintain that airway is fundamental to resuscitation.
