Introduction

The acoustic environment of the intensive care unit (ICU) is frequently neglected despite the increasing number of technical devices and instrumentation and their audible alarms. Noise seems to be a problem recognized by nursing staff (Topf...1989)- Once the problem is recognized, strategies must be developed to ameliorate sound conditions (LercherJ996).

There are various sources of ICU noise. In addition to the technical devices, the features of the building itself and the organization of daily work contribute to the sound pressure level in the ICU.
