Different imaging modalities permit a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the anatomy, morphology, and function of the cardiovascular system ( Marcus ei a/ 19.91). Non-invasive imaging methods, which can be performed quickly at the bedside with little discomfort to the patient and with a low risk of morbidity and mortality, are particularly relevant in the critical care setting.

It is very important, yet sometimes difficult, for physicians in critical care medicine to select from many available imaging techniques a single modality that maximizes the expected gain in diagnostic accuracy and minimizes the time required to establish a diagnosis, discomfort to the patient, and costs.
