Introduction

Practitioners are expected to be skilled in contemporary acute and chronic pain assessment and treatment, but evidence suggests that their training is often inadequate and that pain continues to be undertreated in all areas including critical care ( Dracupand Bryan-Brown 1995). Improvements in knowledge and patient care have been the goals of the International Association for the Study of Pain which was founded in 1974. The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research was established by the United States Department of Health and Human Services to develop practice guidelines for assessment and management of pain ( Ag.┬žD.cy...foL Healthcare P,,o!i,cy.a,nd Research 1992). These practice guidelines, amongst others, are relevant to critical care management.
