Tests that best detect abnormalities in renal function are those that measure glomerular filtration rate. However, these tests many not be useful for screening purposes in the critical care setting. Apart from practical disadvantages, patients with early renal disease may have a normal or even increased glomerular filtration rate. Urinalysis is often the most useful test available for detecting early renal abnormalities. Measuring urinary protein evel or examining the urinary sediment can also help in establishing a specific diagnosis.
