Pharmacological treatment of depression began in the late 1950s with the introduction of imipramine and iproniazid, the prototypical tricyclic compound and monoamine oxidase inhibitor respectively. With the introduction of fluoxetine (in the United States in 1988), the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors became the third class of drugs with a proven effect in the treatment of depression. In addition, there are several atypical compounds that share some but not all of the pharmacological features with cyclic antidepressant or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
