Introduction

Hypernatremia is one of the most commonly encountered electrolyte abnormalities in a hospital population, with an incidence in adults of 0.3 to 4.1 per cent ( Long,,et., al 1991; P_aJ_ev_s_ky_ et.M 1996). Most patients have had severe concomitant diseases, making the attribution of particular signs and symptoms to hypernatremia difficult (Long, ,et,al 1991; .P„a]eysky,eLa.l 1996). There is a paucity of experimental data, in either humans or laboratory animals, on the appropriate therapy for hypernatremia (Ayus M,..§L 1996).
