Burn injury, like most trauma, is a predominantly surgical disease, requiring the removal of devitalized tissue and wound closure. Many burn patients present with medical problems which complicate or delay wound closure if they are not addressed in addition to such acquired conditions as respiratory failure from smoke inhalation and renal failure due to inadequate resuscitation. Hypermetabolism and nutritional support, fluid and electrolyte management, altered pharmacokinetics, topical antimicrobials, and pain control are some of the issues arising with burned patients.
