Agitation and confusion are the most common mental status changes seen in the critical care setting. They are associated with a wide variety of pathological conditions that affect normal brain function and might indicate (a) significant or even life-threatening changes in the patient's medical condition, (b) pre-existing brain dysfunction, or (c) maladaptive behavior in response to stress in the intensive care unit (ICU). Prompt assessment and therapeutic intervention are essential for adequate management of both agitation and confusion.
