Introduction

Law enforcement issues in critical care can be divided into issues of life and death and issues of confidentiality. Other criminal issues seldom arise, as doctors, nurses, and other involved professionals set themselves standards of behavior that are more restrictive than the criminal law. These ethical standards are outside the remit of this topic.

The law discussed is the Law of England (and Wales) unless otherwise stated. The law may differ in other jurisdictions. This chapter should not be seen as legal advice. It is intended as an overview of areas of the law which may be of special interest to the intensivist.
