The relationship between the delivery of oxygen (O 2) to the tissues and its consumption by respiring cells has been the subject of much interest. The various components of this relationship have been termed the oxygen transport system.

Tissue hypoxia can be classified into four common forms: stagnant (low cardiac output), anemic (reduced hemoglobin), hypoxic (reduced arterial oxygen tension (PaO2)), and cytoxic hypoxia (e.g. due to cyanide intoxication). Oxygen flux is defined as the product of arterial oxygen content and cardiac output.

Current interest in monitoring and manipulating oxygen delivery was stimulated by the work of Shoemaker etal (1988) who demonstrated that certain patterns of oxygen transport variables had predictive prognostic value in high-risk surgical cases and that outcome could be improved by manipulating these variables.
