Termination of pregnancy by expeditious delivery was considered the therapy of choice in pre-eclamptic patients with the HELLP syndrome, an attitude justified by the high maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality (Sibaieta/ 1993). Conservative treatment, including bed rest, magnesium sulfate, and antihypertensive medication, may be considered occasionally to allow prolongation of pregnancy when the syndrome occurs early. However, this may be of little benefit for the fetus since growth retardation is often present and will not be greatly modified by a few additional days of gestation.
