In considering the causes of respiratory alkalosis, reference should be made to the alveolar air equation which shows that respiratory alkalosis may be due to an increase in alvelolar ventilation and/or a reduction in the carbon dioxide output. When discussing the non-specific treatment of respiratory alkalosis, the main issues are the magnitude of the alkalemia and whether the actual disorder is acute or chronic. The etiology of the alkalosis must be carefully considered when undertaking any treatment because the prognosis of the acid-base disorder depends strongly on its underlying cause.
