The Therapeutic Intervention Scoring System (TISS) (Cujlen.and Nemeskal 1989) (Tablel), which is probably the oldest of the widely available methods for classifying critical illness, has been used worldwide for many purposes: determining the severity of illness, establishing nurse-to-patient ratios, assessing utilization of intensive care unit (ICU) facilities, and establishing the number of intensive care beds, particularly in response to a request for a Certificate of Need. By quantitating severity of illness using the TISS system, i.e quantitating therapeutic interventions, the above goals can be achieved rapidly, efficiently, and with reasonable precision.
