Although most accidents occur at home, there is no reason to view the intensive care unit (ICU) environment as one of particular safety. The multiplicity of monitors and equipment, all needing electrical power, combined with the dependence, frailty, and relative immobility of the critically ill patient provide the potential for disaster in the event of a fire or electrical emergency. While awareness and good practice will do much to prevent such occurrences, preplanning, training, and rehearsal are essential if the risks posed to patients and staff by such incidents are to be minimized.
