Many critically ill patients are transferred between hospitals, primarily for specialist therapy such as neurosurgery, admission to a staffed intensive care unit (ICU), or admission to specialized investigative facilities. The fundamental standards of care and equipment for between-hospital transfer are similar to those for intrahospital transfer, aiming to move ICU care with the patient (Runcie.. .Mai 1991). The essential differences are that a transport vehicle is required and that staff accompanying the patient during transfer are isolated with no back-up of additional personnel or equipment. Everything that might be required must be transported with the patient. Equipment must be robust and suitable for use in difficult environments.
