In the United States over 98 per cent of patients survive major surgery and 1.5 to 2 per cent die; as there are about 35 million major operations annually, over half a million patients die perioperatively each year. Seven per cent of patients subjected to surgery are defined as high risk (e.g. a history of prior cardiac infarction or stroke, extensive ablative cancer surgery, severe multiple trauma, massive hemorrhage, septic shock, respiratory failure, acute abdominal catastrophe, endstage vascular disease). Thirty-four per cent of these patients died.
