Another method of investigating the potential for recruitment in a given patient is to obtain CT scans of the lung at different pressures. Quantitative analysis of the images provides a precise estimate of the recruited lung at both end-inspiration and end-expiration. CT studies have shown clearly that recruitment occurs at the plateau pressure, and that PEEP just keeps open what has been previously recruited ( Gattinoni etM 1995). CT scanning has confirmed that the potential for recruitment differs between patients with ALI/ARDS of different pathologies.
