Future developments

Alternatives to the transfusion of red cells are being sought in order to overcome some of the hazards associated with transfusion. An appropriate substitute must have an adequate oxygen-carrying capacity, release oxygen readily to the tissues, and be non-toxic. Modified hemoglobin solutions are currently undergoing trials, but difficulties remain with the stability of hemoglobin compounds as some are too rapidly metabolized to be useful. Chapter References
