The back-up frequency should be chosen in conjunction with the tidal volume to provide a minimum minute ventilation ( VE) adequate to maintain pH and patient comfort. In the assist mode, the back-up rate should be adjusted to a frequency sufficient to provide 70 to 80 per cent of the usual VE in case of complete failure of the patient to trigger. In the assist-control mode, any adjustments in the set frequency (up or down) have no effect on VE or the level of machine support, provided that the patient triggers each breath.
