Formation of monoethylglycine xylidide from lidocaine

The formation of monoethylglycine xylidide from lidocaine (lignocaine) (1 mg/kg infused slowly over 3 min) is able to quantify the activity of the cytochrome P-450

enzyme system (OMenc.h.eLa.( 1987). A single sample taken 15 to 30 min after the lidocaine injection is analyzed using a fluorescence polarization immunoassay.

Monoethylglycine xylidide is metabolized from lidocaine by multiple enzymes which are primarily found in the liver, and results have proved to be a reliable predictor of 1 year survival in both adult and pediatric patients with chronic liver disease. Caution must be advised with this test in severe liver dysfunction, as repeated doses can lead to lidocaine toxicity.
