Experimental model of regional infarction

If a major coronary artery branch is ligated in a dog a regional area of ischemia occurs ( Jennings..etal 1995). The lateral margins of this area of myocardium at risk of infarction are determined instantly by the coronary anatomy. Necrosis begins in the subendocardial zone within 10 min and over hours spreads from the endocardium to the epicardial surface. If flow is restored within this 6-h time window, some myocardium can be saved and the infarction does not become transmural. Periods of occlusion lasting for more than 6 h produce a transmural regional infarction.
