Effects on other muscles

Profound potassium depletion may lead to impaired skeletal muscle function with weakness, hyporeflexia, and, in extreme cases, paralysis which may prevent weaning from mechanical ventilation. Muscle weakness may be exacerbated by accompanying hypophosphatemia as potassium depletion leads to renal tubular phosphate wasting. Gut motility may be reduced, leading to paralytic ileus. Vascular smooth muscle contractility may be reduced, leading to reduced pressor responses to catecholamines and angiotensin.
