Distribution of ventilation

There are approximately 150 million alveoli in each lung, and even in the healthy subject inspired gas is not uniformly distributed between all alveoli. During quiet breathing ventilation increases down the lung, i.e. in the gravitational direction. In an upright subject the basal dependent regions are more ventilated than the apical regions, and in the supine position dorsal lung units are better ventilated than ventral regions ( Milic-Emili 1991; N.y,n.,n..,..199.3). In the lateral position the dependent lung receives more ventilation than the upper non-dependent lung.
