In an emergency, giving group O RhD-negative red cells to patients of unknown ABO and RhD groups avoids the major problem of ABO- and RhD-incompatible transfusion reactions, but does not prevent reactions due to antibodies of other red cell antigen systems. Many of these can cause subsequent hemolytic transfusion reactions, although they are usually less severe than ABO-incompatible transfusion reactions. These can be treated as they occur.
