Cost accounting in European ICUs

In a European study performed between 1994 and 1996 (EURICUS-I), data on cost accounting procedures in 89 ICUs in 12 countries were collected ( Reis..iMiiranda et.

al 1998). Although the participating ICUs were not selected as representative of the respective countries, we assume that the data collected illustrate the present situation in a large number of European ICUs.

A cost accounting system was used in only 14 ICUs in this sample. The costing systems used were diverse, ranging from the very sophisticated to the very simple, such as recording only the costs of disposables and pharmaceuticals or only the costs of materials used and depreciation of equipment, or using a predetermined cost per TISS point.
