Continuous measurement of S V02

Fiber-optic catheters have been developed which continuously measure and display the value of S V02 using an appropriate monitor. If the ability of the tissues to extract oxygen is preserved, a decrease in SV02 usually indicates a mismatch between supply and demand. S V02 can change because of an increase in oxygen consumption or a decrease in oxygen delivery. Also, in patients with sepsis and/or acute respiratory distress syndrome S Vo2 could change as a result of variation in the ability of tissues to consume oxygen and could represent either an improvement or a deterioration.
