Conclusions

There is a need for research to continue in intensive care for the benefit of patients. The problem of consent remains difficult, but clearly there is a case for carrying out research without consent provided that the proper procedures of a stringent, ethical, and scientific research ethics committee have been followed. These committees should scrutinize proposals and look critically at the scientific basis of the work in order that researchers may retain public confidence, whilst advancing the standards of treatment available in intensive care.
