Conclusions

ECG monitoring has become the standard of care in patients at risk of cardiac arrhythmias. Many commercial systems are available with a variety of sophistication. Standardized testing of such equipment is performed to assure quality care for the arrhythmia patient. However, equipment is not the only requirement for quality monitoring. Highly trained personnel are required to identify serious arrhythmias and to carry out appropriate corrective interventions. Finally, in the age of optimum utilization, careful patient selection for ICU and telemetry monitoring units is essential.
