Complications of endotracheal intubation

1. Failed intubation and its sequelae, i.e. hypoxemia.

2. Trauma to eyes, neck, jaw, teeth, lips, nasal mucosa, mouth, tongue, pharynx, larynx, laryngeal nerves, and trachea.

3. Infections of mouth, lips, and maxillary sinuses.

4. Surgical emphysema due to inadvertent puncture of the trachea with the bougie.

5. Myocardial ischemia or cerebral hemorrhage as a result of the hypertensive response to laryngoscopy and intubation.

6. Adverse reactions to drugs.
