Effective communication is essential. In the case of intramural movements (e.g. to radiology), waiting should be minimized and the transport party should be familiar with the route. In the case of extramural operations, a physician should be available at all times at the major referral center for urgent consultation by remote hospitals.

Other consultative services (e.g. neurosurgery) should also be easily accessible.

At the remote hospital, the transportation team assumes management after examination of the patient and consultation with the staff and relatives. They direct urgent investigations and modifications to therapy before traveling, and obtain copies of relevant data and radiographs.

Contact between the transportation team, the transport authority, and hospital staff at the final destination is essential. A radio system, linking aircraft or road ambulance and recipient hospitals, should be used to alert the center of immediate needs, such as preparation for CT scanning or assembly of a trauma team. On arrival, the patient is handed over to those assuming care.
