Injuries to the colon and rectum may lead to abdominal sepsis and subsequent multiple organ failure following massive fecal contamination, and are associated with a high mortality rate. The introduction of antibiotics has improved outcome significantly. Antibiotic treatment should be initiated as soon as possible and directed against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
Blunt injury can result in both devascularizing lesions, most often located in the right colon, and perforating injuries, which are often seen in the sigmoid colon as a result of the formation of closed loops (Dauterjve... et,§L 198.5). Diversion is usually necessary.
