Chlormethiazole

Chlormethiazole is unusual among anesthetic agents in that the antiseizure effect of the drug occurs at concentrations which are frequently below those needed to abolish consciousness. As a consequence, it is frequently used as an initial treatment for status epilepticus in those countries where it is available. As the dose is increased, coma and respiratory depression may occur unpredictably. These effects occur synergistically with other hypnosedative agents.

This drug binds to plastic, decreasing its bioavailability, and may damage some multilumen catheter systems.
