Cerebellar hematomas

Ten per cent of all primary intracerebral hematomas occur in the cerebellum, usually related to hypertension. There may be associated hydrocephalus. Surgical intervention is often urgently required, and is most often carried out in moribund or deteriorating patients. Evacuation is by suboccipital craniectomy and can be combined with placement of an external ventricular drain. Preoperative preparation of the patient is as described above, with emphasis placed on rapidity and medical management of raised intracranial pressure meanwhile.
