Cellular defenses

Cells have evolved a number of protective mechanisms against injury and 'premature ageing' which may be impaired by disease. These defense mechanisms include induction of heat shock proteins which preserve cellular protein synthesis and are produced in response to a variety of cellular insults, including thermal injury. Antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, glutathione, vitamins C and E, and sulfhydryl-containing molecules provide protection against reactive oxygen species, and their depletion potentiates oxidative damage. Several cytokines (e.g. interleukins 10 and 13) have anti-inflammatory properties, and it is possible that constitutional differences in the expression of these mediators might in part determine susceptibility to critical illness.
