Many patients with multiple organ failure develop altered mental status ranging from disorientation and drowsiness to coma. Midazolam and propofol are useful agents if sedation is required, but they may contribute to the alterations in consciousness. Central nervous system investigations are generally negative in patients with unexplained alteration of mental status: the cerebrospinal fluid is unremarkable and the CT scan is normal. The EEG may show non-specific diffuse slowing of electrical activity. There is no specific treatment for brain failure.
